Heavily influenced by the 1970s and 80s, new wave and synth pop music emerged as a new wave of artists entered the scene. Much of the music throughout the 1960s and 70s was heavily influenced by the blues. New wave music took a different approach, with rock n’ roll, punk, pop, art rock, funk, and even reggae heard throughout. From the beginning, new wave music was characteristically diverse in sound with artists like Blondie and Elvis Costello appropriating the rawness of punk music to create their own sound.
New wave music can be easily recognized by its unique sound that sees a reduced influence of the blues, coupled with punk energy, rhythmic experimentation, increased use of electronic keyboards, and an overall mainstream feel that appealed to the masses.
Similar to new wave, synth pop music emerged throughout the 1970s and 80s. Synth pop music embodied the post-punk energy of new wave music and combined it with electronic music. The result was a sound that was characterized by the use of synthesizers, drum machines, and simple lyrics that were light and playful in nature. Not only that, but many of the synth-pop artists possessed an unmistakable androgynous look that challenged the mainstream concept of gender-based fashion.
Artists such as Duran Duran, Ultravox, and Tears for Fears skyrocketed in popularity. And, while synth pop decreased in popularity at the onset of the 90s, its lasting influence can be felt through pop artists today, such as Chvrches and Naked and Famous.
