In school, you probably learned that sound is made up of waves. And the sound that comes from your speaker is produced by taking tiny electrical waves and amplifying them to augment their strength. These waves are used to move a coil which compresses the air and produces vibrations.
This is a complex and delicate process that involves a lot of electronic circuitry. As this analog electrical wave passes through the various circuits and becomes amplified to produce a sound wave, there will always be a certain amount of electrical interference which will pollute this signal and slightly changed the shape of the weight. As a result, the sound you hear will be slightly distorted from its original form.
Ordinary consumer speakers will use tricks to compensate for this pollution. They have built in circuits that will tweak the sound to give the illusion of richer, fuller sound. In the process, they are polluting & distorting this wave even more.
Distortion is also caused as the speaker compresses the air. Depending on the material used to produce the speaker, it may distort very high or very low frequencies differently at different volumes.
Because of these and other problems, any track that you record will sound completely different when played on different speakers. Since you can’t predict how your listener’s speakers will distort the sound they produce, you will need to produce your recordings and listen to your music with the minimum possible amount of distortion.
If you are truly serious and the producing music, you will need a set of high-fidelity speakers that can produce a “flat” sound with the minimum possible amount of distortion. Also, this sound should maintain its fidelity regardless of frequency or volume.
A good set of studio monitor speakers should have the following:
When you first hear the flat sound coming from a set of high quality studio monitors, it will probably sound strange. For someone who’s used to hearing music through low quality speakers, it will seem strange to hear such flat, crisp sound without any enhancements.
But over time, you will train your ears to listen to music differently. The music you produce will become much more sophisticated, and the quality of your sound recordings will be greatly improved.
If you’re serious about music, studio monitors are a must.
