Flava Flav – whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton, Jr. – was raised Long Island, and was the son of a restaurant owner. At the age of 5, he began to show promise as a child prodigy. Later in life, he would team up with Carlton Ridenhour (also known as Chuck D) to form a new rap group called Public Enemy.
As the group began to gain more notoriety, they caught the attention of Def Jam records. Although Flava Flav’s role within Public Enemy had been somewhat puzzling to Def Jam, it soon became clear that he was a crowd favorite and an essential part of the group.
Public Enemy eventually went on to leave their mark on history, and are now remembered as one of the most important rap groups of the nineteen eighties.
Flava Flav had a unique knack for revving up an audience, and also served as a source of comic relief for a group that was otherwise very serious and politically-oriented. This made for a more balanced feel which was much more commercially appealing.
Today, it’s common for rap groups to have a “hype man” on their crew, and this is just one of many rap innovations which can be directly attributed to Flava Flav.
