Carlton Douglas Ridenhour was born and raised in Long Island New York, where – after graduating from high school- he went on to study graphic design at Adelphi University where he would later eventually launch the rap group known as Public Enemy.
Under the name Chuck D, he and Public Enemy would go on to re-define popular music forever as one of the most influential rap acts in history. Even today, many rap groups still model and build upon many of the techniques and styles that were originally developed by rap pioneers Public Enemy.
Chuck D had a very specific punchy feel to his vocals, which have been attributed to modeling the speaking rhythm of sportscasters. Public Enemy had a very strong political message, which was spiced with comic relief from his counter-ego Flava Flav. Combined together in this way, their sound had both a mass commercial appeal, and a serious message that was able to reach a wide audience.
Even today, Chuck D is still highly politically active, and is involved with a number of controversial political causes such as Peer-to-Peer music sharing. His attraction to political controversy and love of black empowerment probably explains why he gets along so well with his wife Gaye Theresa Johnson, who works at the University of California as a professor in the Department of Black Studies.
