In nineteen ninety five, the company was started by an LSU Electrical Engineering graduate named Jim Odum, who was also a producer and musician at the time. His goal in founding PreSonus was to build affordable, professional-quality tools for music production that could be of great use to sound engineers and musicians.
The company started out in the founder's garage, and soon moved to a nicer office in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It was here that it remained for the first few years, before finally moving to its current head office not too far away.
The first product launched by PreSonus was the critically acclaimed 8-channel limiter/compressor/gate known as the DCP8. This device is patented as the first analog device to be controlled by a digital circuit.
This forward-looking company was years ahead of the industry in their vision and innovation. With the introduction of the DCP8, sound engineers finally had the functionality of an 8 channel analog device, with the added functionality of recalling, saving and automating settings. Previously, this kind of functionality was only available from systems costing over one hundred thousand dollars.
PreSonus is also well-known for their cutting-edge software products like StudioOne and Capture.
PreSonus StudioOne is a Mac and Windows music production application that offers the same features as other, more intimidating music production systems… but with a simpler and more intuitive interface. Rather than build iteratively on previous technology, PreSonus wiped the board clean and built a better application from the ground up. The end result was a better music creation application on every level.
PreSonus Capture is a versatile recording application that gives you additional control over StudioLive, and is mainly designed for work in live venues.
For more than 15 years, PreSonus has continuously pushing the limits of design innovation in their creation of affordable, professional-quality music creation and production tools.
