MIDI Controllers and Keyboards

Simply put, MIDI technology allows you to take digital input and use it to control sound.

MIDI keyboards

The most common and versatile MIDI input devices are electronic piano keyboards. These allow you to play a melody, record it, and use this digital encoding as the basis for any other instrument. You can use a keyboard to record a number of tracks individually, and then combine them to simulate the appearance of an entire band or orchestra:

  • One track for guitar
  • One track for bass
  • One track for drums
  • One track for violin

MIDI can also be used to turn samples into musical instruments. You can record a song on a piano, and then play it back using a dog bark as a musical instrument. This really opens up a lot of possibilities for music composers.

And MIDI input devices aren’t just limited to keyboards!

Just about any instrument can be used to create a digitized signal for MIDI. Many drummers will use MIDI drums so they can practice and listen to their music on headphones without waking up everyone in the house.

But most importantly, computers can be used to compose music, or MIDI files can also be downloaded from the internet. This is where the REAL power of MIDI can be exploited. Once music has been digitized, you can then manipulate it and interact with it.

But in order to get the most out of MIDI composition and mixing, you need the right set of tools. Mixing software is essential, since it gives you the ability to layer music and perform advanced sound manipulation and adjustments such as tempo, echo or pitch.

MIDI controllers

If you’re going to be mixing music on a computer, you’ll want an interface device that feels natural & organic while giving you advanced functionality on-the-fly. This is where MIDI controllers can really help.

The MIDI controllers offered by PlayDeRecord have all been developed with serious musical composers and DJs in mind. They’re all intended to provide powerful functionality while integrating seamlessly with professional DJ software like Ableton Live and others.

With nothing more than a MIDI keyboard, a MIDI controller, a decent computer, and a good quality microphone, you can turn any room into your very own music studio.
