The idea for this book came about in 2004 when Madvillaniny and MF DOOM were looking for some new artwork concepts for their upcoming album.
That's when they were introduced to Jason Jägel, who was already well-acquainted with their music style. In fact, he had once proposed an experimental art show which would consist of every lyric in Operation Doomsday written on the walls by hand.
Jason had been asked to come up with some new ideas for the upcoming FOOD album, and he quickly responded with the cover artwork within less than 24 hours. And the quality of the work was incredible, with all sorts of intricate hidden details. It was the sort of thing you could just stare at for hours on end.
After this first experience, the artist continued to do more work through that same record label. His work can be seen on some of Madlib's Monkfunkin album and a few early concepts for the revamp of Operation Doomsday.
For anyone who's a fan of DOOM or Madlib, 73 Funshine will be a real treat.
