Since the West-Kingston area of Jamaica is called Jungle by the locals, people who come from that area would often label themselves “Junglist”. (West Kingston was made famous by Bob Marley in the song “Concrete Jungle”)

In addition to the geographic labeling, Jamaicans also associate Junglists with bad-boy gangster culture, often assigning the labels of “Rude Bwoi”. Junglist culture is also where the term “original rudebwoiys” originated, which originally evolved into then now over-used term “original gangster”.

Later, as Drum and Bass and Jungle music started to become more popular, fans of these genres began to label themselves with this nickname as well. Specifically, you will usually find Jungalists listening to Oldschool and Ragga Jungle styles of music.

Despite its seedy roots, urban Junglist culture is relatively clean. In Junglist culture, most forms of illegal behavior are frowned upon. (With the exception of graffiti and drug use. Marijuana is especially prevalent, given the style’s Jamaican roots)

Today, Junglist culture is more often associated with the United Kingdom’s underground drum and bass music subculture. But unlike other subcultures – such as punk or goth – junglists don’t advertise themselves through the use of attention-getting fashion or mannerisms. However, a “Gangsta” fashion style has begun to evolve within recent years… helping this group to highlight themselves in society.

Probably the best-known example would be Ali-G, who many would consider to be a parody of Junglist culture.

Support the drum and bass industry, and make your preference known. Wear a Junglist t-shirt and let the world discover the joys of drum and bass.
